How to become the next fitness champion – and why it might be harder than you think

How did a man who’s never been in a gym make his way to the top?

Well, we asked him to tell us how he overcame his fear of being overweight and his fear that he’d never achieve his goals.

Now in his 40s, Chris is a successful personal trainer and author.

In the first of our two-part series, Chris tells us what made him want to train hard and push himself to his limits.

We asked him how he made his way from being a child who couldn’t walk or run to the world’s best athlete.

What made you want to work out?

The first thing that I thought was very important for me to understand was that I was an adult and that I had control over my body.

I was the child of parents who worked out regularly and had been training for a long time.

I grew up in a house where we would work out every morning.

I would work up a sweat and eat a small snack, and then go to bed.

So I had a pretty good understanding of what was normal for me.

I felt I had to be strong and healthy, and that meant that I would be at a gym or at home.

What I didn’t understand was how strong I was physically.

I’d always thought that strength was what you did with your hands and feet, and I’d only ever done exercises where I would push myself into those positions.

But I’d never really been able to put that into practice, because I wasn’t at home with the weight plates or the weights.

I wasn, like, a child with a disability.

When I got to the gym, I was in the middle of an interview and a client came up to me and asked if I could do something with them.

I said yes and we were chatting for about five minutes about how I got here, how I’m doing and where I’m at, and it was then that I realised how hard it was for me as an adult.

What did you do to get to the point where you can’t do that?

My first step was actually when I started working out, I did a series of squats.

I didn.

It was a big mistake.

When you go to a gym, you’re not there to be able to do squats.

You’re there to do a bunch of things that are going to be difficult and scary.

I started out doing just one set, but then I started doing more sets and more reps, and eventually I was able to get into the squat rack and start working up to a 10-rep squat.

That was a huge mistake.

And then I just stopped doing squats and started doing things like leg extensions and deadlifts and lunges.

I thought, Oh my god, I’ve got to get stronger, I have to get out of that squat rack, I need to improve my core strength.

I realised, Oh no, this isn’t going to work.

And that was the start of the training for the rest of my life.

What were some of the things that made you start working out more?

Well I started to think about what I needed to do to do more, and the first thing I thought about was my fitness.

I used to have a problem when I went out in the streets because I’d go into a shop and people would just go in and get a new pair of shoes, and they’d get into it and be like, ‘Hey, I think you should buy a pair of trainers’, and I would just walk away and never look back.

That’s when I realised I was just doing things that were easy to do.

And I realised that, in order to get the results that I wanted, I needed the exercise.

So that’s what I started training for.

How did you start building muscle?

My body is very flexible, and in the past I used my bodyweight to make sure that I got the right amount of muscle in the right places, and my body weight made me strong, but I also realised that my body had a finite amount of fat and a finite number of muscle.
