As more than 100 investigators searched for the killer, his accomplices in a car chase and a shootout with police had all died.
Now, a new video released Wednesday by the West Virginia State Police shows the chaotic aftermath of the school shooting that killed 19 children and six adults.
The suspect in the massacre has been identified as 24-year-old Robert Lewis Dear.
He is being held in a rural prison near Charleston, and investigators say the manhunt has now ended.
On Tuesday, the man charged with the massacre and the gunman, 25-year old Adam Purinton, were in a vehicle in a field near the school when a man driving a pickup truck shot at them.
They then fled the area and are still at large.
The video, taken from inside the pickup, shows a man on a motorcycle riding toward the school, and a man in a white SUV shooting into the air before turning back.
It was the first time the police department released a video of a school shooting.
“We have no idea what the motive was,” said Trooper Brian McCarty of the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
“We have to wait until we get some kind of video.”
The video was released as investigators continue to comb through the scene of the attack in the town of DeSoto.
A grand jury is investigating the shooting.
West Virginia Gov.
John Carney, who has been in office since the 1990s, has ordered a state of emergency in the state after more than 600 students were shot and killed at the West Point Elementary School.
“The West Virginia community is devastated by this tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families,” Carney said.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them and with the many students and staff who lost their lives.”
The state has a law allowing for up to 10 years in prison for anyone convicted of the shooting, but Carney has said he will review the sentence.
“I want to make sure the law is in place and that justice is done,” he said.
A local school district spokesman said the district had been working to find a new school principal and other officials since the shooting and that officials were working to get answers.
