The first time I took part in an exercise class was at a local park in northern NSW.
As the sun rose, I was asked to do a 30-metre sprint.
The course was run by a small gym, but I’d already had a few hours in the gym.
I took it easy on my legs, just doing the work and hoping for a good result.
A few days later, I came across a group of four people in a park near my home.
They were all doing pushups, sit-ups and pull-ups, and it made me realise just how much they were missing out on.
I’d never done any of those things before, and the fact that I hadn’t was frustrating.
I had been planning to do pushups for a few months before, but had only done two.
The next day, I tried a modified pushup.
I thought it would be better, but this time it was a different kettlebell.
I was surprised when I didn’t feel anything.
The muscles in my legs were working overtime, and my knees felt a little sore.
But it was the final pushup that really gave me the run of the park.
At first, I thought the pull-up might be harder than it really was.
But it wasn’t, and that’s when I realised I was doing the wrong thing.
I knew I’d probably never pull-press with my knees as strong as I wanted them, so I was trying to do more pull-offs and not less.
That was about two weeks before my first session, and when I started, I felt like I’d gone too far.
My knee was sore, and I thought I was in trouble.
Then I realised my grip wasn’t quite right, so after two weeks of struggling to get my hands up and do push-ups with my elbows, I decided to take a break.
After a few weeks, I got my grip back.
It was then that I realised just how hard I had it.
The exercises weren’t the same as before, so it was important to be able to do them consistently.
The push-up had become a full-body exercise, and now I was using my legs to push myself up to the top of the hill.
In the years since, I’ve continued doing these same exercises regularly.
I’m now a certified kettlebell instructor, and for the past 12 months, I also run a full time fitness class every week.
For some people, the benefits of physical activity are obvious.
Some may say that exercise is the best way to get your metabolism up and burn fat, and you can’t help but feel the benefits when you see the numbers on your exercise tracker.
However, for some people it can be hard to see the benefits.
For some people exercise doesn’t seem to be an effective way to lose weight.
For many, it’s not good for the joints, or even for your health.
And when it comes to exercise, it can take time to see benefits and to realise they’re there.
